Weird pond snails fighting in my tank. :S

Postby Vil » Tue Nov 19, 2013 6:08 pm

Hey there,

I have my new shrimp tank fishless cycling at the moment and it has become overrun with algae and what not. As usual some snails came in on the plants and do not seem at all bothered by the cycling. The difference is that these ones don't appear to be the same types as appeared in my other tanks. I have some that look like a clearish spotted ramshorn snail and these odd pond snails with long tails. I was watching them zooming around today and saw them chasing one another then standing up on their tails and grappling. They did this a few times before I managed to get my camera and catch them doing it. Not sure if this is fighting or something kinkier.

Here is the video I made. Please ignore the algae and filth. I'm waiting for the tank to finish cycling before I clean it.

I have never seen or heard of any thing like that before.

Was the Video speeded up if not they certainly move very fast.

I would not add any thing to that tank until you find out exactly what they are.

If they have to be removed it could be rather a difficult job if you have anything in that tank.

No the video wasn't altered up at all. They are the fastest ones I have ever seen.

I've asked a few people but no-one seems to know what they are. I can't imagine they would be dangerous to shrimp and they don't seem to be breeding too fast like those annoying mini snails do so hopefully they can stay as they are kind of interesting. Might try and ask around a bit more though just in case.

Cool. I thought they were probably just a slightly different pond snail variety than the ones in my other tanks. :)

I've just never seen them doing that before.

Yep look like regular pond snail high on viagra

They are harmless to shrimps, though their population could get out of hand if you dont manually remove some once in a while. They could end up competing with your shrimps for food.

They do seem to move around quite fast

I've got a heap of these in my tanks. I decided not to attempt to do anything after my shrimps started picking them up and eating stuff off their shells. It's the funniest thing in the world to watch the snail FREAK OUT.

They can be very fast, but not in my shrimp tank and the more disgusting the water the faster they get. I moved some into a small tank in my kitchen I'm using to grow out some java ferns, for algae control, and they got really speedy.

You may want to keep an eye on them - every now and then I get one with an absolutely awesome shell pattern. It disappears as they get older, but they're glorious as juveniles. It looks like speckled gold. I had a white one too.

Haha! Snails gone wild! Hopefully this tank has the same effect on my CBS and rilis.

Haha. Shrimp are funny. My native shrimp ride my mystery snail so they can get first dibs on its poop. Gross but hilarious to see a snail going along with 5 shrimp in top like a little bus. I have baby golden mystery snails in my largest tank at the moment (although I managed to offload 10 of the 30+ I have) because the snail was pregnant before I got it. My shrimp pick them off the glass and drop them when they realise they aren't food. Then they all begin to make their way back up again and the entire process repeats.

Yeah, some of the pond snail patterns are quite nice. I was just glad to see something other than mini ramshorns appearing for a change. I swear if I leave a piece of spinach in there too long ONE TIME overnight those quadruple in number.

yup overfeeding the tank does cause an explosion of baby snails, so feed less and remove some each day by hand and they are then easy to control cheers jk
